Hormones effect everything, your moods, memory, metabolism, appearance, aging, appetite , sleep, stress response and sex drive . Yep that just about covers it . Pretty much everything .

We tend to think of hormones as only sex hormones as they are responsible for tears and personality changes at "that " time of the month. However hormones are the biochemical messengers including hormones of the endocrine system, neurotransmitter s of the neurological system and the cytokines of the immune system . All biochemical s act as hormones altering what we do , how we feel and how we think !
Hormones react to the stimuli of both the internal and external environment, just like an electrical current surging through our body humming away evenly . Have you ever been really nervous before a major event in your life like an operation , an exam, a big job interview? Whilst the brain fusses nicer the possible outcomes, your heart races and the gut rumbles. These excitatory neurotransmitter s create the necessary chemical messengers to restore the balance. The challenge is more often than not , our electric , high speed "exciting stressful lives that we have created , disturbs equilibrium and we live rather in a state of "fright and flight "!

High stress means high adrenaline with excessive cortisol production interfering with other hormones . I guess it is a domino effect . Having too much cortisol interrupts the release of insulin thereby not able to deliver glucose to the cell .It disturbs melatonin production which is vital as  our sleep regulator. Cortisol plays a role in the immune system in cytokine production . It plays a huge role in hashimotos disease and hypothyroidism as it interferes with T4 s conversion into T3 thereby producing high levels of reverse T3 . Stress leads to inflammation of all tissues and inflammation leads to DISEASE.  So to coin the phrase that was used by a stressed out young lady in one of our modern day lifestyle programs;"calm your farm". Perhaps if we took this advice we would be a lot better off.

Stress can effectively switch off the immune system making you more vulnerable to infection, auto immune diseases and even cancer .
So when it comes to health it is a myriad of interconnecting systems that is predominately led by the conductor of this physical orchestra , our endocrine system. Perhaps we really need to look at our communication system and look after this a little bit better . Hormonal health is a disease of the 21st century , a product of our modern world and modern way of life . Harmonious hormones, in tune with the world and in sync with the rest of our bodies .
